Where are you headed?
Pastor Andy Stanley says that direction, not intention, determines your destination.  Imagine your next family vacation is a beach trip to the gulf coast.  You've packed the car with beach towels, bathing suits, sun screen, sand toys and a boogie board.  The Iowa weather has taken its toll one your soul and you can hardly handle a moment more of this unending sea of white that has plagued us for months now.  The chance to swap out snow boots for flip flops and long underwear for swimming trunks is the single motivating factor that gets you through each day as the calendar counts down toward your much needed escape from this Midwestern frozen tundra.  The day finally arrives, the cooler is packed and the tension is mounting.  Relief fills the air as you finally pull out of the driveway and get on the road.  Off you drive up I-35 NORTH.  As the miles pass by something doesn't seem right.  Moment by moment you are getting farther and farther from the beach, but you continue until finally you reach the Canadian boarder.  Did you bring your passport?  Direction, not intention, determines your destination.  No matter how ready you were for the beach, I-35 NORTH just wont get you there.  It's the wrong direction.  So what are you intentions?  And what is your direction?  If your intention is to grow closer to your family, how many extra hours are you putting in at work?  If you intend to lose weight, does your direction take you to exercise and healthy eating or the movie theater and extra butter on your popcorn?  If your intention is to more fully engage your relationship with God, does your direction take you to worship and study or just more hoping?  Direction, not intention, determines your destination.  Where are you headed?

From The Road...
It's just been a few days since I returned from the General Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and chaos and excitement of the event is beginning to wear off and the demands of church life back here at home have started to call again.  And this is actually a good thing!  While I love gathering with several thousand other ministers and members of the DOC from across the country and the world, all of that excitement just got my wheels spinning on what ministry looks like here.  What it's like now and what it might look like in the weeks, months and years to come.  It was great to hear stories from other leaders who talked about what has been working in their churches and what has totally flopped.  It's inspiring to know that communities all over are looking around at changing circumstances for better and for worse and looking to God for the wisdom to navigate a new path.  I went, I saw, I heard, I worshiped, I Learned, I laughed, I said "good bye" and have settled back home.    I am excited about where God is leading us.  I am choosing to have faith in a faithful God.  I am certain that God's dreams for this church exceed whatever we might come up with on our own.  I am certain that the gifts we each possess and choose to share will be exactly what God needs to ignite something new in the life of this Body of Christ.  Give God the chance to make more out of your life and your gifts than you ever thought possible.  Give this church the opportunity to flourish with ministry that transforms lives and shares God's good news wherever we are called to share it!

Here We Go...

It's pretty surprising to think how quickly the weeks have passed since I last visited Bondurant in March.  Life in Iowa is treating me better than I could have hoped for.  Compared to the triple digit heat of TX, these 70 degree days and patches of rain are a welcome relief.  I'm pleased to be your minister and really look forward to everything that is to come.  Keep an eye out on this blog for updates on my Iowa adventures, jokes and other observations.

 Peace,

Peter
